ABOUT "giclée PRINTS

The French word "giclée," ( pronounced "zhee-klay," and meaning to squirt or spray), has come to be the accepted term to describe the relatively new technology which allows the making of high-quality fine art prints from a digital source using high resolution ink-jet printers.  The term now represents any inkjet-based digital print produced as a fine-art reproduction.

In this process, images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival-quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art paper, and photo-base paper.  The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than all other means of reproduction previously available.

Giclee prints are hugely advantageous to artists who do not find it economically feasible to mass produce their work, but who want to reproduce their art as needed, or on-demand.  Once an image is digitally archived, additional reproductions can be made with minimal effort and at a reasonable cost.  Also, the prohibitive up-front costs of mass production for an edition are eliminated. Obviously, the cost benefit is also an advantage to the buyer.

Archived files will not deteriorate in quality as negatives and film inherently do. Another tremendous advantage of giclee printing is that digital images can be reproduced to almost any size and onto various media, giving the artist the ability to customize prints for a specific client.

The quality of the giclee print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes that are commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

Giclee prints offered on Hank's website are Somerset Velvet Giclee Prints that produce the look and feel of high-quality watercolor paper and are produced with Somerset Velvet paper and Epson Ultrachrome professional archival inks.
